a Toxic Fairy

Imagine a beauty with long golden hair, as once the Marilyn Monroe. She never looses her amazement about her own performances as one may hear after her meeting with Shenk.

what's toxic?Toxics

Toxic damage, better known as Poison, has the highest amount of damage possible per single attack. Poison is different form all other kinds of damage. It doesn't release its whole damage in a single moment, but needs some time for unlashing its full potential of destruction.

did anyone mention high poison resistance? :-)

Introduction

The Amazon's Spear and Javelin Skill Tree offers three different ways of doing damage. These skills build up on physical, poison and lightning damage. The lightning path is an often chosen route for many players. The physical path is well investigated by our suicidal sisters. Only the poison path remains somewhat of a mystery.

I intend to shed some light on the applications of poison skills. The high damage quantities possible with enough + skills are quite tempting. One should mind that those damage values represent the total damage over a period of time. If one accepts this, the skills Poison Javelin and Plague Javelin offer potent ways for killing.

This writing is based on the different poison threads in various forums as well as my own experiences with my three Poisonzons in LoD 1.10 Ladder. They are all matriarchs by now in their nineties and still refuse to be retired. While levelling further in 1.11b nonLadder I couldn't detect any differences to 1.10 except that mobs in nonLadder are a bit easier.
Even in Classic the Poison Skills have power and add to the playing experience of an Amazon. I myself prefer LoD, but I recently discovered a Classic Guide in the German forum by Noir. About the Javazon he says: While in classic a hybrid build is normally viewed critically for a variety of reasons this is not true for a Javazon. In case of a Javazon a poison and lightning Javazon build is better than the pure lightning counterpart. She is easier to play and fare more variable, universally applicable, faster and stronger as well as fully applicable for MF-Runs in all MF-areas.

In parties without a Summoner Nec the Poisonzon, due to her two colleagues (Decoy and Valk), seems as firm as a rock. When Frenzy or Soul boss packs are about and others leave the game after the first few RIPs, she'll keep her balance and go her way. Even PoisI Souls won't bring her in hopeless situations. Left alone in a full game, she'll take her time to clear a map, but this is something one should accept.

What does the poison build have to offer? The Poisonzon doesn't need any special or expensive items. Therefore the Poisonzon is a suitable starter char e.g. after Ladder reset or for someone new to the Amazon class. Experiences with another summoner char (Nec, Dru, Pala, Assa) are beneficial, since one should know about behaviour routines of mobs and blockers to play fluently and successfully. The poison skills are highly versatile and can effectively be combined with a whole lot of other skills.
A basic requirement for the usage of Poison is the company of stable blockers.

Key to the poison path is the time needed to wait upon the effect. The usual sequence, one or two hits and the opponent is a bloody smearing on the ground, doesn't work here. The theme is patience. As compensation whole groups of mobs gathering around Decoy or Valk may keel over at the same moment with one good placed throw. Some bit later, possibly one has to poison again, almost all mobs fall in one fell swoop.

The Cast Delay of the Poison Skills doesn't bother at all. Throwing javelins frequently isn't doing any good, because in the end only the timer for being poisoned will be reset. During the Cast Delay the Zone usually regenerates enough Mana so she'll even need no leech.
A skill profiting from a cast delay would be the Nec's Poison Nova. Thanks to NHD this is a real pain to a party if used improperly (that is, casted permanently like any Nova Sorc).

Edit June 2007: there's been news about Evasive skills' mechanism, so I updated this chapter.
Further update November 2008: added a bit on poison theory, and SSoG's and onderduiker's findings/testings about poison and Venom, and included some more links.
