You Can't always Get what You Want

Shrines

On your dangerous travellings throughout Sanctuario you may frequntly encounter some Shrines with various effects. In wilderness they're more common than in indoor areas. The rarity column in Shrines.txt seems to control the probability of a given kind of shrine to appear.

With a few exceptions activating a shrine will only affect the player character who activated it, not his Pets and not the party.
Shrine appearance is most of the time defined by the map it will spawn in, it doesn't correlate with shrine's effect. But most shrines have a hovering flag symbol assigned which will switch to character's head due to activation.
Shrine effects with that flags are technically very similar to curses, indeed foeish curses will override a shrine effect and vice versa. Also Paladin's Cleansing aura and Assassin's Fade skill will lower shrine effect's duration.
Shrines become inactive once activated. Some are only available one time, others will recover over some time, thus being available multiple times.

Health Shrine

This shrine has no flag of its own, its effect is immediately.
It restores character's full health.
It'll need 96 seconds until it is available again.

Well

Wells are quite common. They're no shrines in literal meanings, but work a bit similar to the Refilling Shrine.
They restore Life, Mana and Stamina with 50% of each maximum value. Differently to other shrines this also affects character's hireling and Pets, but not the party and no converted enemies. Wells also cure poisoning by setting Poison Length to zero.
A Well is usable two times in a row, since first usage will only empty half of it. Both halfs are independently refilled after 30 seconds.

In about 12 yards radius around the shrine all units - including the activating character - will loose 50% of actual life. Despite the name this is no fire damage. There's no resistance to it. It is unclear if shrine's effect also happens to hidden units to which line of sight is broken by objects (trees and suchlike).

Playing funny games: if the subordinated monster of a reviving monster becomes a boss, the reviving one will also revive the new boss. Look if it drops always like a boss ;-)

Gem Shrine

Activating this shrine will upgrade a gem in character's inventory to next quality. If this is not possible since the character doesn't carry around an appropriate gem the shrine will drop a chipped gem. At least during 1.10beta this defense bonus was cumulatively calculated.

see also:

Combat Shrine

Combat Shrine Icon

Activating the shrine will give character's physical damage a bonus of 200%; this effect is additively with other percentage boni from equipment omitting the weapon.

Also it will increase character's Attack Rating by 200%. The AR bonus is cumulatively calculated with total AR, not additively to other percentage boni. Thus it'll triple total AR.
Not enough, if another Combat Shrine is used upon that, another cumulative 200% bonus will be granted, thus giving you nine times AR of your regular value.

The effect lasts 96 seconds.
It'll need 240 seconds (four minutes) until the shrine is available again.

Shrine of Enirhs et al

There were plans to create more kinds of shrines, the remnants in Shrines.txt are all you can find about it nowadays. Effects like 'halfs mana, but doubles life' or vice versa, 'increases maximum mana', 'increases maximum life' are readable in the txt file. A really funny idea was the Shrine of Enirhs, which should cause the character's name to be displayed backwards in the game.
Kids, don't try this at home.
